Step 3: Seriously? Another Serum?

Posted on

Here at Buffalo Gal, if there's one thing our fearless leader (owner and chemist) Kasia Cummings is serious about, it's serums! Once you've cleansed and toned, your skin is prepped for some significant work. Serums are the heavy hitters of skincare. Based on your skin type and the issue that you're looking to address, we're guaranteed to have a serum you need. If you've read the rest of our posts, I'm sure you're starting to notice a trend here.

Let's start with talking about what exactly a serum is. In the most basic terms, a serum is a lightweight fast-absorbing liquid that is typically used after cleansing and toning, and before moisturizing. The molecules in serums are smaller which allows them to penetrate deeper into the skin and then do work on a more cellular level. Serums deliver a high concentration of active ingredients into the deeper layers of the skin, which makes them a great tool for tackling more specified skincare issues.

Texture is another distinguishing characteristic of serums. The majority of Buffalo Gal's serums are oil based in order to deliver the much needed intense hydration and nourishment that your skin craves, especially after those cold winter months! But, we also carry a handful of lotion based serums as well. They still carry the same weight as our typical serums, just with a different feel during application. Although, it is important to keep in mind that even our lotion based serums still differ from moisturizers.

What's THE most important thing that serums do for your skin? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Products that hydrate your skin (i.e. serums) bring water and healthy oils into the skin. Now, following a serum with a moisturizer will keep that water on your skin and in your cells. Breaking this down, serums add water and moisturizers lock it in, leaving your skin hydrated and moisturized.

The question of oily skin and oil based serums may have crossed your mind. If you've read our previous post on cleansers, you'll know the answer to this one. Basically, yes, oily skin can highly benefit from oil based serums. Your skin produces excess oil when it is dehydrated and oil based serums work to discourage that process leaving your skin hydrated and balanced.

Real talk, there are many incredible serums in the Buffalo Gal portfolio, but there are two that we are especially crazy about. Our "Balanced" 2 in 1 serum is a lotion based serum that ANY skin type can benefit from, and we mean any! Packed with Vitamins A, B, C and E, your skin will thrive. It's the perfect mattifier for oilier complexions while still maintaining hydration for our dryer friends.

While "Balanced" is my pick for lotion based serums, "Star Flower" in the Blue Tansy line if for sure my fav when it comes to oil based serums. Get this, not only is "Star Flower" super light weight, but this serum also contains Lactobacillus, that's right, Probiotics! If acne is caused by an overproduction of bad bacteria, I wonder what introducing good, healthy bacteria will do... I'm guessing you'll be pretty happy with the results!

Sometimes we like to take our serum step to another level. Let's change the game a bit by using a jade roller during application. Jade rollers really are a serum's best friend. As a stone, Jade naturally tends to maintain a cooler temperature which in turn decreases puffiness on the skin. Starting from the middle of the face and rolling out toward the ears, you're also encouraging lymphatic drainage and increasing circulation, The results? Brighter, tighter and toned skin! Try it out and let us know how much you love it!!
